Question for steam users

ok so i was wondering if a friend has the steam version of a game, an i have the retail version
is it possible to set up a game between the two?
Ive used a program called game ranger and i wasn't sure if that could be used for steam an nonsteam games?
i tried a Google search
didn't get much out of it

Host a lobbie or game that someone with a retail version of the game could play with a steam game

You mean like an XBox live style lobby?

It's too bad that the golden age of gaming seems to be going by the way side as corporate entities take over and systematically remove features that used to be free....

Like being able to choose what IP you connect to or being able to put a game on a server and playing it from there.
